The Sound of Animals Fighting - We Must Become the Change We Want to See DVD Editor's Pick

This super-group of indie rockstars is considered a side-project by many, especially since most of their albums and music seem to happen when these friends decide to get together and jam. “We Must Become the Change We Want to See” is a gift from the heavens as it documents the four shows that the group performed together—one show alone is a rarity so this is truly a fine present. The DVD’s audio quality is peerless while the performance is as golden as it can get; members of the group dance about with other stage dancers, masked creatures, and folks painting on the side of the stage. Certainly not your average indie show and perhaps why this lavish expansive tour performed at four different House of Blues (San Diego, Las Vegas, Hollywood, and Anaheim) was somewhat limited in scope. While the group started as a mysterious band with the group’s members taking on animal names for monikers, the secret is out (and has been out per their Wikipedia page) for quite some time; the group embraces that somewhat by letting their hair down and just blasting us with some of their serene and catchy tracks dating back to their debut “Tiger & the Duke”.

It’s sad when the best actor is the real boxer.

This Is Tom Jones - DVD

How anyone could find Mr. Tom Jones as sexy is beyond me. The fact that he hosted his own weekly musical variety show from ’69 to ’71, proves that network television always had bad ideas.

Les Claypool - Fancy DVD

Chronicling Les Claypool’s manic 2006 tour from the fan’s viewpoint, “Fancy” was filmed by fans who were provided DV cameras and free reign to film whatever the hell they wanted to. Of course this isn’t the first time this has been done—the Beastie Boys put out something similar a couple of years back. Then the footage was used alongside fan audio recordings and music stripped straight from the soundboard. The result is damn impressive and a pretty darn entertaining way to hear the mad man of bass. I love the wackiness that Claypool has always held dear in his lyrics, costumes, and his vast catalog; “Fancy” just reinforces that ten-fold.

Jerry Lee Lewis - Greatest Live Performances DVD

Jerry Lee Lewis was a pretty special entertainer and always extraordinarily wild on stage. His signature brand of boogie woogie rock ‘n’ roll was what everyone knew him for. But many people missed out that Jerry became a bit of a country star by the ‘70’s. As the title suggests, this DVD indeed captures Lewis’s greatest performances throughout three decades of wild entertaining rock ‘n’ roll.

Young boy finds dragon egg. Become dragon rider. Denies the prophecy that’s he’s the savior that the world has been waiting for. Finds courage after his teacher role model dies trying to save him. Wins battle with Big Evil. Movie credits roll. Yes that describes 3,916 film plots. Fantasy movies don’t get more predictable than this.

Even the extreme douche bagginess of Paul Shaffer doesn’t interfere with the great and legendary piano rock ‘n’ roll legends of Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Fats Domino. Joined by Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood and drummer Steve Jordan, this trio of awesome piano talent rock through 17 songs of classics with over 50 minutes of bonus material to wet your noodle. Filmed at the legendary New Orleans club Storyville nightclub, the DVD boasts tremendous sound and plenty of energy. Amazing ivory tickling at every moment.

Fuck - DVD

A documentary all about the f-word? You betcha. While the movie certainly tries to take a bit of a stand in terms of where they stand in terms of censorship (why else make a movie documenting the mother of all curses?), they show both sides even having the absurd Pat Boone discuss how instead of cussing he uses the word “Boone”—obviously he doesn’t sense the irony that the reason you utter a curse is why it’s bad, not the ‘word’. Alan Keyes and members of so-called family groups speak their mind about how atrocious bad language is and ‘blah blah’ about the ‘children’. Dispelling the urban legends on how the word came about the documentary even tracks that the word was used in a poem in the 1400s as well as showing up in several other scripts later on. So yeah, no ‘Fornicate Under the Consent of the King’ anymore please.

Serum - DVD

Sometimes watching a horror movie just to watch a horror movie is a bad idea. I’m down with “B movies” but this was a little ridiculous. A horribly written script that finds a doctor trying to find a ‘cure all’ serum, that he clearly decides needs to use brain fluid (from a living person) as the secret special ingredient, on his just-hit-by-a-car-and-paralyzed nephew. This serum turns his nephew into a monster cannibal zombie sort of creature. The special effects are terrible in this direct-to-video ‘movie’.

Brick - DVD

Well after five minutes of this “brainy” movie I wanted to put a rake on the ground and step on it so it would bang into my skull. I would repeat this until I passed out obviously. The movie was supposed to be intelligent film noir about a teenager that enters the underground of his high school to figure out the disappearance/murder of his ex-girlfriend; instead you just want him and everyone else to die.
